Rich in history and a melting pot of various cultures that have influenced its past, the evolution of Filipino culture has attained a uniqueness all its own.
Long before the Spaniards re-discovered this archipelago, there was already an established trade route for bartering goods between the native people, Indo-Malays and Chinese merchants. Land bridges connected to the main continent of Asia existed at that time, making the islands easily accessible The Spanish conquistadores first landed in the island of Cebu, where they initially established a colonial government. Later in 1571, the seat of the government was transferred to Manila, which became the capital. Four hundred years of Spanish rule has brought in a lot of European influences. But the Filipino's way of life was to be changed again by other various colonists, mainly the Dutch, the Americans and the Japanese.
Today, the Philippines has a rich heritage combined with various contributions of advancement (commercialisation) from the west. It is the third largest English-speaking country in the world with world class facilities and services.

It is a centre of commerce for the region, with Manila & Cebu as the primary trade centres.

The country is divided geographically into three major groups of islands, namely: Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao.

Luzon is the largest island with the concentration of cosmopolitan influences in the cities. The Visayas are composed of approximately 6000 islands, which include the prominent islands of Cebu and Bohol. Mindanao is the second largest, made up of 400 smaller islands. The Spaniards were not successful in converting this region to Christianity. Unlike Luzon and the Visayas, the Mindanao region is predominantly Moslem.
