Passport & Visas   Climate
  Travelers to Singapore must have a valid passport for entry which must be valid for at least six months beyond the anticipated duration of stay. Australian passport holders may stay up to 60 days without a visa. Non Australian passport holders should check with their travel agent for visa requirements.     Singapore is almost on the equator and this ensures a warm, sunny and generally humid climate all year round. There is a wet season from November to February, during which brief thunderstorms are experienced. Even though you may find an umbrella useful during wet season, the temperature always remains between the 22 to 32 Celsius.
     
     
     
Airport Tax   What to Wear
  Australian authorities make a Passenger Movement Charge from Australia and a Noise Levy Tax for arrivals into Sydney. A Passenger Service Tax and departure Tax is payable at Singapore’s Changi airport. All of these charges should be paid prior to departure and marked on your airline ticket.     Due to the warm and humid climate, light weight natural fabrics are best recommended. Although the general manner of dress is informal, restrictions apply when visiting mosques or temples.
     
     
Customs   Local Cuisine
  Any amount of currency or travellers cheques may be carried through Singapore. A duty free allowance of one litre of alcohol is allowed. Chewing Gum and Tobacco products must be declared. The Singapore government imposes harsh penalties for drug trafficking.     Most hotels and restaurants offer a wide range of local and international dishes. Street vendors (Hawkers) and local eating establishments offer many tempting dishes drawn from Singapore's multi-cultural origins.
     
     
Currency and Banking   Tipping
  The Singapore dollar is the unit of currency and is based on the decimal system. (100 cents to One dollar) The exchange rate is AUD $1.00 to S $1.05 (August 2001).     The majority of hotels and restaurants include a 10% service charge which will be shown on the bill. Additional tipping is not compulsory but if you do wish to give more than the service charge, a further 5% to 10% is always safe.

  Monday to Friday 10.00am to 3.00pm for banks and 5.00pm for offices
Saturday 9.30am to 11.30am and midday for offices
  Shopping
      Shopping complexes, supermarkets and department stores offer air-conditioned comfort and an assurance of guaranteed trading practices at fixed prices. Singapore has many shopping plazas and street markets which are great fun and offer many bargains.
Credit Cards and Travellers Cheques    
  It is always safest to take traveler's cheques with you when on holidays. Major credit cards are accepted in most hotels, retail places and business establishments. Street exchanges may offer better rates but may have hidden charges. It is always advisable to change money only at authorised establishments in any country.    
    Language
      Several dialects of Indian, Chinese and Malay are spoken in Singapore although Mandarin is the official language. Most Singaporeans speak English well in addition to their particular ethnic language. Restaurants, hotels most information services and major newspapers all use English.
     
Travel Insurance    
  Travel insurance is highly recommended especially when you're travelling to destinations quite foreign to other places you've ever been to. The unexpected always happens when you least expect it and where you least expect it!   Health
